This Artist 101 tells you everything you need to know about Icelandic trio Hatari.
What do I need to know about Hatari?
Comprising of Klemens Hannigan, Matthias Tryggvi Haraldsson and Einar Hrafn Stefansson, the techno and punk rock band from Reykjavík, Hatari, will be representing Iceland in Eurovision Song Contest. The trio will be joined by Sólbjört, Andrean, and Ástrós who have already created a mark for themselves in the country’s dance scene.
While the trio formed in 2015, their debut EP was released in the year 2017. Since their debut, the trio have been the recipients of several awards. The members come with years of experience and a very focused approach towards their art.
Prior to their selection as participants for the Eurovision Song Contest, Hatari performed their final concert in December after the board of directors at Svikamylla ehf. decided to dissolve the band. We are yet to see if this is indeed an end for the band.
Hatari present themselves as an anti-capitalist group. Their art helpe listeners navigate through the binaries that sum up our existence as human beings on this planet. Below is an introduction by Hatari, shared by Eurovision TV wherein they explicated the meaning behind their music:
“We cannot change things, but we can unveil the anomie of neoliberal society, the pointlessness of every minute spent in the futile race, and the low price for which man now sells himself ever more blatantly. We can scream at our own impotence, scream at our collective sleepwalk through routine, and implore our audience to unite, shoulder to shoulder, and dance. Dance, basically, or die. Hatari represent a considered reflection on hope and hopelessness, power and repression, of image, individualism, despotism, exposing the contradictions that arise when everyone is embedded within the same system and struggling to fight against it. We are Hatari. We are all Hatari.”
Hatari will be representing their country with their song Hatrið mun sigra.
